Last Call: Non-Provisional Taxpayers Must File by 23 October

Taxpayer reviewing financial paperwork before the income tax filing deadline

The clock is ticking. If you are a non-provisional individual taxpayer who is required to submit a 2026 income tax return, the filing window closes on 23 October 2026. Check your filing obligation and assessment status now so you have time to resolve any problems.

What Happens If You Are Late?

SARS may impose fixed monthly administrative non-compliance penalties for outstanding returns. The amount depends on taxable income and can range from R250 to R16,000 per month while the non-compliance continues, subject to the applicable rules. Penalties are not necessarily unavoidable: a request for remission may be available where the requirements are met. Filing late should still be addressed promptly.

Filing Quickly and Correctly

Here is how to prepare before the deadline:

  • Use SARS eFiling or the SARS MobiApp. Review your profile and outstanding return requirements.
  • Check your auto-assessment. If SARS auto-assessed you and you agree that the information and outcome are correct, SARS says no further action is required. If something is missing or incorrect, correct and submit your return in line with SARS guidance.
  • Have your documents ready. Gather your IRP5 certificates, medical scheme information and retirement annuity contribution certificates, together with any other documents relevant to your circumstances.
  • File early. Allow time to check the return and deal with access or supporting-document queries.

Why Acting Now Matters

Filing on time helps avoid unnecessary costs and last-minute stress. Submission does not remove the need to respond to any later SARS verification or document request, so retain your supporting records and monitor your eFiling correspondence.

The 23 October 2026 deadline applies to the non-provisional filing window. Provisional taxpayers generally have until 22 January 2027. If you are unsure which category or filing obligation applies, obtain advice before relying on a deadline.
